The European WelFarmers project, funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Program, is advancing its mission to identify and promote best practices in pig welfare. The project, which focuses on recognizing farms that stand out for their commitment to animal welfare and fosters a positive impact on the industry, addresses four key themes:

  1. Ban of cages: Loose housing of lactating sows.
  2. Undocked tails: Production of pigs with non-docked tails.
  3. Castration: Avoiding pain in castration.
  4. Space/flooring: Space allowance and flooring for nursery and finishing.

The project is currently in the first phase of implementation. At this stage, Regional Networks (RN) have been established in the participating countries. These networks, led by farmers and their organizations, select the most innovative good practices on pig farms in different regions. Specific Thematic Groups (TG) have also been set up for each topic, made up of producers, policy makers, advisors, scientists, and other actors in the food chain. Their task is to assess that the selected good practices address the main challenges in the EU swine industry identified by the Regional Networks.

Next steps for the project

As the project progresses, updates, new developments, and materials such as technical articles, abstracts, webinars, and virtual farm tours, will be available to those interested through the project's official website. In addition, updates will also be shared on WelFarmers' social networks and on 333's social network profile. The first good practices are being identified and will be chosen in April.

As active collaborators of this initiative, 333 will continue to inform you about the most important developments and news. Want to know more? Check for the latest updates at www.welfarmers.com.
