During the month of June, we surveyed users of 333 on their practice of inducing farrowing on the farm. Specifically, we asked users whether or not they synchronize farrowing on their farms and, if so, whether they do it routinely or only in some cases (last sows in the batch, old sows, etc.). In total, we received 318 responses from 53 countries.
The results showed that 43.1% of the respondents induce farrowing only in some sows, followed by 37.4% who synchronize farrowing systematically on their farms. On the other hand, 19.5% of users choose not to do this practice.
Inducing farrowing with prostaglandins is a way to increase farrowing supervision and provide adequate care for piglets in the first hours of life. But opinions about it vary widely among technicians.
In the article Does synchronizing farrowing affect sow and piglet production data? A review of the data, Enric Marco analyzes the possible reason for the variable perception of this tool.
