Abortions are the intrauterine death of fetuses (involving loss of gestation between days 35 and 110). All of the fetuses are expelled.
The percent of abortions among sows serviced should always be less than 2%. When the level is above this limit and we have ruled out that the abortions are not concentrated around a certain parity, the next step is to find out if they are related to seasonality, in which case they will be concentrated around a few months of the year, or if the abortions occur at a specific time during gestation. The answer to these questions will help us detect the cause of abortions on our farm.
Abortions are concentrated around a few specific months
Abortions are occurring at a specific point in gestation
Abortions are occurring at non-specific points in gestation
