Abortions are the intrauterine death of the fetuses (which involves a loss of gestation between day 35 and 110). All the fetuses are expelled. The percent of abortions among the sows serviced should always be less than 2%. When this limit is surpassed, we should investigate the cause.
In over 60% of the cases of abortion, the causal agent is not identified. To be able to identify the cause, we must understand the dynamics surrounding abortions on a farm under normal conditions. Abortions are more frequent in the summer and autumn than in the winter and spring and are more frequent in very old sows and very young sows.
In order to discover the possible cause of the abortions, we must ask whether they are concentrated around a particular parity.
Abortions mainly in first parity sows
Abortions evenly distributed among all parities
