This tool used to troubleshoot problems with the feed conversion ratio (FCR) is designed to detect all the causes that can increase the FCR of our farm. At the end of the article, you will find a flow chart that will allow you to navigate through the whole tool.
So far we have divided the causes that affect the FCR into two big categories, those that increase mortality and those that do not. In turn, we have divided those that do not increase mortality into those that do not affect average daily gain (ADG) and those that do. The causes that alter FCR, but not mortality or ADG, are as follows:
· Feed wastage. We increase feed consumption, but the pig's genetic capacity to grow efficiently is not affected. As we have already mentioned, the origins of feed losses can be very disparate:
- Problems during storage or distribution.
- Feed theft.
- Hoppers too open, or with rationed feeding systems: providing excessive daily rations.
- Type of feeder used.
- Meal vs. pelleted feed.
- Poor quality pellets with high percentage of mixed meal (>25%).
· Lack of fasting before slaughter
· Feed low in energy. If there is no limitation on the daily feed intake, a reduction in the feed's energy value will be associated with an increase in the daily feed intake, while the daily gain is maintained.
· Water:feed ratio in liquid diets. Insufficient or excess water in the mixture can increase the feed conversion ratio.
· Genetics
