Goal
Making the data collection more visual and being able to obtain the information from the rear of the sow. With this aim, the sow's card is wrapped in a transparent plastic bag, and the information is written down on it with a thick marker. This idea is Ivalin Todorov Dimitro's, from the Navarons farm, in Barcelona, Spain.
Explanation
When the pregnant stalled sows' cards are hung, there is always a dilemma: What is better? That the information is visible from the sow's front or from its rear?
If the cards are placed so the information can be read from the front, when we need to check a sow's 'CV' from the rear we will have a problem. If we place them on the rear, the same happens while we walk through the front aisle.
To solve this situation, a good idea is to wrap the cards in plastic bags, so the obverse of the card can be read from the front, and on the rear, the basic information is written on the plastic bag.
On the rear we will write the most important information: Sow no. / Weaning date / Cycle no. / Insemination. For example, this sow was weaned on 24 May, it is on its second cycle, and it was inseminated on 29 May.
This sow was weaned on 30 March, it is on its 2nd cycle, it was inseminated on 30 March and it returned to oestrus on 19 April.
This other sow is a gilt. Its first insemination was on 5 March. It aborted later on and was iseminated for the second time on 30 March. Its pregnancy diagnosis with ultrasounds was negative and it In this way, we can make decisions in the key moments from the rear of the sow (when a sow returns to oestrus, when it does not come into heat, when it aborts or has discharges...), and we will not make the frequent mistake of inseminating a sow with many problems because we have not seen well its information. |
