This is a simple but very effective trick to protect us from those little needles that our porcine friends have for teeth and that, from time to time, stick in our fingers when we grind their teeth, if we have to do it to prevent fights and transmission of diseases...
Although there is a trend in the industry to eliminate or forego these types of procedures (teeth clipping or grinding, tail docking, etc.), the truth is that there are still farms that are obliged to do them. In our case, our pigs are prone to suffer from exudative epidermitis (greasy pig disease), both in the farrowing room and in the nursery, so we must grind the teeth in order to improve the welfare of our animals.
As seen in the first image, an injury caused by this procedure is not very serious, but it is unpleasant.
With the use of silicone thimbles, we avoid these unpleasant injuries and contribute to the well-being of the personnel, which is also important and sometimes seems to be overlooked.
