It is not always possible (from a technical and/or economical standpoint) to install adequate cooling systems in every sow barn. When the heat reaches limits that are difficult for the sows (and for us) to bear, it is essential to intervene in some way.
Installing a fan is normally done so that by moving the air the animals get some relief. But if we combine the air with a little cool water... it is possible to lower the ambient temperature by a few degrees.
Here is how this farmer intervened. First, he installed a fan in the window of the farrowing room, which pushes air inward toward the sows.
He then installed a sprayer in front of the fan, on the inside of the barn, which is manually adjustable by means of a ball valve.
The nozzle is positioned so that the water mist is directed over the column of air coming from the fan blades.
The water droplets mix with the air and are carried into the environment, which contributes to significantly lowering the temperature, providing a considerable benefit to the animals.
