Joaquín Gadea Mateos

University of Murcia - Spain Author

Degree in Veterinary Medicine (1990) and PhD in Veterinary Medicine (Animal Reproduction, 1997) from the University of Murcia. In 2001, I obtained the diploma from the European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR). My training has been complemented with several postgraduate courses and stays in numerous international centers, including a year as a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford.

In the professional field, I have been a veterinary inspector of the Generalitat Valenciana since 1993 and I am on leave of absence. Since 1995, I have been a Professor of Physiology at the University of Murcia, where I have held several positions. I teach Veterinary Physiology for undergraduate students and Reproductive Biology for masters and doctoral students.

My research has focused on reproductive biology for more than three decades. In the last 20 years, my research has focused on the generation of genetically modified animals to serve as experimental models, first, by exploiting the ability of sperm to bind and transport exogenous DNA (sperm-mediated gene transfer, SMGT) and, more recently since 2015, the use of nucleases (CRISPR-Cas9) to generate gene-edited knock-out pigs to serve as models of human disease and for animal production.

A very important aspect of my work has been cooperation with companies and institutions to develop research projects and the transfer of technology to the animal production and human reproductive medicine sectors.

The work of my research career has been recognized among the Top 2% of World Scientists (Stanford ranking) in all editions from 2020 to 2024 in the scientific fields of Animal Science, Obstetrics, and Reproductive Medicine. This ranking identifies the most relevant scientists in the world according to the citation impact of their publications.

This intense and continuous research and teaching activity, which has been developed in recent years, has only been possible thanks to the coordinated work of the Research Group in Reproductive Physiology of the University of Murcia.
