Julián Montoya
Carval - Colombia AuthorI am a swine health specialist with a focus on managing health in pig farming operations. I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Universidad CES in Medellin in 2015 and subsequently worked for Alimentos Cárnicos, a vertically integrated company with 9,000 sows, part of the Nutresa Group. My role involved coordinating the swine health care program, which included biosecurity measures, vaccination, medication, and monitoring protocols, as well as overseeing animal welfare and participating in evaluating new technologies.
In 2019, I began a Master’s program at the University of Minnesota, where I concentrated on the epidemiology of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus in finishing pigs, investigating its prevalence and associated risk factors. My research included studying PRRSV prevalence in manure pits, its seasonal patterns, and the virus’s shedding and viability in manure pits.
Since 2021, I have been working at Carval, a Colombian pharmaceutical company, as the Health Technical Director for their swine division. In this role, I focus primarily on the epidemiology of PRRSV, provide production advice, and collaborate with production companies.
