Paul Spillane
Agrihealth Veterinary Consultants - Ireland AuthorPaul Spillane graduated in Veterinary medicine from University College Dublin in 1987. He worked in companion animal and mixed practice in the U.K. from 1987 to 1996. Since 1996, he has been engaged as a Pig Veterinary Consultant in Ireland. He was awarded the post graduate Certificate in Pig Medicine qualification by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1999, after completing an examination process involving preparation of case reports as well as written and oral examinations.
In 2001, Paul joined Agrihealth Veterinary Consultants, a veterinary practice with a team of two pig and two poultry vets, which provides services to the pig and poultry sectors in Ireland. Paul has a particular interest in pig pathology and health monitoring by regular inspection of batches of pigs at the abattoir. Agrihealth Veterinary Consultants have developed AIMS (Agrihealth Inspection and Monitoring Service), which facilitates benchmarking of pig health over time in individual herds and in the Irish pig industry as a whole.
The pig and poultry team are currently focussed on developing systems to monitor antibiotic usage on their client’s farms, with a view to promoting responsible, rational antibiotic use and to reduce the use of antibiotics over time. Paul has delivered presentations at national and international conferences and has published several papers.
