Exposure to oral fluid in PRRS gilt acclimation
The method is based on oral fluid collection from the groups of viraemic pigs by means of cotton ropes that will be hung in the incoming gilts pens.

S/P values for oral fluid are usually much higher than in case of serum samples (S/P 3.0 or more is often for positives). However, the number of Ab in saliva is significantly lower than in serum, so S/P >0.4 tells us that the animals should gain the immunity. Normally I’m satisfied if the S/P is 1 or more. Bear in mind that the result may vary on the sample quality (positive, watery sample or sample with a lot of “dirt” may give lower results, closer to 0.4 or even negative).

Using a tarpaulin to crowd pigs together
This method works especially well in farms where pens are wide or have unusual dimensions.
