Vassilis G. Papatsiros
University of Thessaly (UTH) - Greece AuthorVassilis G. Papatsiros was born in Messolonghi (West Greece) in 1975. He graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 2001. He then received a PhD specialization in Swine Medicine by AUTH (Farm Animal Clinic, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) in 2005. He worked for 2 years as swine practitioner and veterinary consultant in large-scale pig farms in Greece. He gave lectures in the Greek National School of Public Health (Program of Master of Science in Veterinary Public Health) between 2007-2008. In addition, he worked as an adjunct lecturer of porcine medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of UTH for 3 years (2007-2010). From 2007 to 2011, he served as a veterinary officer in the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food (Directorate General of Veterinary Services). In 2012, he received a special training in epidemiology of swine diseases in the Field Station for Epidemiology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Bakum, Germany. He currently works as an Assistant Professor (Farm Animal Clinic) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of UTH, where he teaches Porcine Medicine, Farm Animal Medicine, Animal Husbandry and Behavior (Porcine Production).
Dr. V.G. Papatsiros has taken part as co-ordinator or collaborator in numerous National and European research projects. He has published a) one book for porcine bacterial diseases (in Greek), b) one book for porcine digestive diseases (in Greek), c) one chapter in a book of veterinary medicine (in English) and d) 2 other chapters in veterinary books (in English). He is also author or co-author of many articles published in international scientific journals and he has numerous oral or poster presentations in national and international congresses. He is member of editorial board and reviewer in many international journals. He is also scientific evaluator of the Greek Accreditation System for Quality Assurance of Pork Meat and of various international projects (e.g. International Bureau of the German Ministry of Education and Science, Russian Federation calls, ERAfrica).
His research focuses on the study of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) and other porcine diseases (diagnosis, treatment, prevention, metaphylaxis, prophylaxis). He also designed and carried out various clinical and field trials (vaccines, veterinary pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, probiotics, phytogenics, feed additives). As part of his research, he has a special interest for Porcine Herd Health Management and Animal Welfare.
