The on-going cases of African swine fever across Russia and Eastern Europe and the spread of PED in the United States are constant reminders of the havoc that can be spread by infectious diseases. The external biosecurity of the pig unit should, therefore, always be at the top of a producer’s mind, advises ACMC veterinary consultant, Paul Thompson.
In particular, it is important to ensure there is a clearly-defined secure perimeter through which access to the unit can be controlled. Provision of a changing area, in which visitors change into the unit’s own boots and overalls, significantly reduces risk of disease introduction. As some of these exotic viruses will spread through meat, it is essential that no meat products are taken on to the unit itself and all farm workers and stockpeople should be reminded of risk of meat products in lunches.
