With many producers taking finished pigs to the upper extremes of their contract weight, accurate weighing of pigs is essential to minimise the risk of pigs being out of the weight-range tolerance.

ACMCWith many producers taking finished pigs to the upper extremes of their contract weight, accurate weighing of pigs is essential to minimise the risk of pigs being out of the weight-range tolerance. This can result in heavy penalties, points out Paul Thompson, veterinary adviser to pig-breeding company ACMC.

Ensuring scales are properly maintained and sited free from obstructions is important to getting accurate weights. In addition, scales should be regularly calibrated ideally with a known standard weight.
