Agriculture is the key sector of the economy in the 21st century. The medium and long-term challenges of global food security, climate change and biomass for energy production present excellent perspectives for agriculture. This was impressively underpinned by Agritechnica 2009 with a seven percent growth in the number of exhibitors and a three percent rise in visitor figures. More than 350,000 expert visitors, including over 77,000 from outside Germany, came to the Exhibition Grounds in Hanover from 8 to 14 November 2009.

The following preliminary conclusions can be drawn:

1. The agricultural machinery and equipment industry and its suppliers were excellently represented at Agritechnica 2009. More than 2,300 companies from 46 countries showed a complete programme of machinery, equipment, spare parts and accessories. The international contingent grew from 43 to 47 percent.

2. Agritechnica is the agricultural machinery industry’s platform for launching new machines and implements. Innovations from the areas of electronics, instrumentation and controls and data management make it possible to achieve new dimensions in precision and efficiency.

3. With over 350,000 visitors, Agritechnica has reached a new record level. This result documents the constant high level of interest in the latest machinery and equipment for arable farming and fodder crops among business farmers worldwide.

4. Some 273,000 visitors from Germany came to Agritechnica. This underscores the exhibition’s status as information platform for professional farmers, contractors and dealers in Germany.

5. The share of visitors from outside Germany continues to rise. Their numbers swelled by 5,000 this year, taking the total up to 77,000 international expert visitors. This demonstrates that European farmers, contractors and dealers see Agritechnica as the event that forges their future, while at the same time the exhibition is also increasingly attracting visitors from the rest of the world too. The results of a neutral survey of visitors revealed that the largest contingents of international visitors came from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, France and Italy. The numbers from Central and Eastern Europe remained relatively constant at approximately 13,000 investors from these countries. Most of the visitors from this region hailed from Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia and Ukraine. The further increase in the number of expert visitors from North America is also remarkable. Some 3,600 agricultural specialists crossed the Atlantic for the exhibition this year. There were also distinct rises in visitor numbers from Spain, Brazil and India. Visitors came from altogether 81 different countries.

6. Around 55 percent of visitors to Agritechnica are business farmers. Almost 30,000 machinery dealers and distributors and their staff visitors came to Hanover, as well as over 26,000 from the machinery manufacturing and supply industry. In addition some 23,000 farm contractors from home and abroad visited Agritechnica.

7. At 70 percent, the actual readiness to invest during the next two years displayed by farmers and contractors is surprisingly positive.

8. The new hall concept with its clear division into key areas and the consistent orientation of Agritechnica to agricultural machinery and equipment and cropland farming matched visitor expectations unrestrictedly. 97 percent of the visitors assessed Agritechnica positively.

9. The “World Soil and Water Show” conceived by DLG attracted much attention. Together with international experts from research, industry and practice, it demonstrated the effects of climate change on the soil and on water supply and potential solutions for many regions of the world.
The many specialist technical events on current and future challenges facing agriculture and agricultural machinery and equipment are a hallmark of Agritechnica.

10. Agricultural machinery and equipment represent a high-tech branch with a great variety of increasingly attractive career prospects. The extensive range of information covering the various occupations in the agricultural machinery industry, including servicing and repairs as well as trade, and in the rest of the agricultural sector was very well received. The Special “Workshop Live” attracted particular attention. Here agricultural machinery mechanics — from apprentices to certified master craftsmen — demonstrated their skills and potential on high-tech machinery in typical maintenance and service situations.

11. The European Young Farmers and Student Day (Thursday and Friday) is now a well-established feature at Agritechnica. More than 10,000 young farmers and students from Germany and other countries made good use of the various events offered at Agritechnica. One top hit was the panel discussion with 500 young entrepreneurs from many European countries. They are proud of their professions and are confident that they will enjoy a successful future. Once again the “Young Farmers Party” with some 2,700 young people proved to be a highlight of Agritechnica 2009.

The next Agritechnica will be held from 15 to 19 November 2011 (Preview Days on 13 and 14 November) at the Exhibition Grounds in Hanover.
