The international exhibition for agricultural machinery and equipment, Agritechnica 2009, being held at the Exhibition Grounds in Hanover from 10 to 14 November 2009 (Preview Days on 8 and 9 November), will be presenting answers to the future for agriculture. This is evident from the over 300 innovations reported to the organiser, the DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft – German Agricultural Society). The accelerating use of electronics in particular offers farmers from all farm types and sizes new options for necessary improvements in efficiency. This makes Agritechnica 2009 a perceptible innovations engine for agriculture in times of financial and economic crisis.

Dr. Reinhard Grandke, General Executive Manager of DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft – German Agricultural Society), Frankfurt am Main

Enhancing efficiency with innovative machinery and equipment

Holding one's ground in these times of low product prices and high costs is a major challenge for each individual farmer. He is only able to influence product prices minimally, so large and small farms need to work on their outlay for achieving returns and to boost efficiency in production. There is great potential for this, in plant production especially, through electronics and new dimensions in machinery performance. For example Precision Farming allows substantial changes in farm organisation and in production technology. At the same time raw materials can be produced in more environmentally compatible manner and with greater conservation of natural resources. With its outstanding innovations in agricultural machinery and equipment, Agritechnica is a unique source of information for farmers. This is where global expertise from industry, practical farming, academia and consultancy services is concentrated. Agritechnica 2009 is the most important source of impetus for each individual farmer and the entire branch. It offers orientation for tackling present and future tasks.

Over 1,000 international exhibitors for the first time

International participation at this year's Agritechnica is excellent. For the first time over 1,000 exhibitors from other countries will be presenting their products and services. This accounts for almost 50 percent of exhibitors at Agritechnica. The fact that 45 countries are participating (2007: 36) also sets a new record. Agritechnica is thus growing into a new dimension. It is more international than ever before. The largest contingents of international exhibitors come from Italy (274), the Netherlands (81), France (75), Turkey (66), Austria (65), China (54), Argentina (39), Spain (35), Canada (34), Denmark (33), the United Kingdom (33) and India (28). Increases in numbers have been noted in particular from France, Turkey, China, Canada, Argentina and India. The growing number of country pavilions with participation from Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Canada, Pakistan and the USA is encouraging. DLG sees the high level of international participation to be a distinct indication of growing global orientation of the agricultural machinery industry and agribusiness with its global interlinks. Manufacturers want to use the platform specifically for developing new markets. "The world meets at Agritechnica in Hanover."

All the world's leading enterprises represented

The world's largest programme of modern agricultural machinery and equipment as well as components and spare parts will be presented at Agritechnica 2009. All internationally leading businesses in the sector will be represented and present individual strategies for every type of farm. They will display a product range adapted to a variety of conditions and requirements. Every farmer will find what he needs for steering his farm successfully to the future at Agritechnica. The programme for tillage and grassland harvesting in particular has grown significantly once again by comparison with the last event. Agritechnica 2009 will cover the growing diversity in the agricultural sector with its offers of agricultural machinery and equipment, trend analyses and events: Problem solutions will be offered for both cost leaders and farms operating as specialists in their regions and aiming to expand their opportunities and their value adding potential, for instance as providers of regional specialities in fruit and vegetable growing, organic farming or landscape conservation.

A highlight in the technical programme – the "World Soil and Water Show"

Soil and water are the most important production factors in agriculture worldwide. Arable land is scarce and in view of the influence of climate change demand-driven water supplies pose an enormous challenge to farmers all over the world. Water-conserving tillage and the use of innovative irrigation equipment and systems are thus central tasks for sustainable farming. The "World Soil and Water Show" will therefore be a highlight in the technical programme at Agritechnica 2009. Here innovative tillage and water use concepts at various locations worldwide will be shown on an exhibition floor space of about 1,500 m² in Hall 11. Visitors will be able to gain a compact overview of technologies and concepts for tillage and irrigation in a very short space of time. For instance the show will display how water availability develops for agriculture at a wide range of locations and what measures farmers can take to ensure water supply at their locations, how closely water and soil are interconnected. The society for soil and water conserving tillage and the FAO experts for example will be presenting successful concepts for adapting arable farming to aridity and extreme wetness. For this they will show examples of arid locations in China and Africa and locations with extreme wetness in Germany. The show will be presented in three languages – German, English and Russian. Highly reputed experts will be available to visitors during the show to answer questions about their own locations and discuss their own farming.

International technical programme expanded further

Agritechnica is the most important future forum for the agricultural sector. With its comprehensive and high quality technical programme with a large number of international events such as congresses, workshops and forums, it will point up machinery and equipment trends and address all key questions concerning the future of agriculture and agricultural machinery and equipment. The following events are among those taking place: the International Agricultural Machinery Congress on 6 and 7 November 2009, a Chinese-European Agricultural Machinery Conference on 10 November, an International Conference on Agricultural Commodity Markets 2010 on 10 November, the Seed Congress on 11 November and the "Agriculture in Eastern Europe and Central Asia" Conference on 11 November. Furthermore, representatives from the worlds of academia, consultancy, industry and practical farming will be presenting current trends and important developments in interesting thematic areas of the branch at three forums set up in the Agritechnica exhibition halls every day.

Special show "Workshop LIVE"

Agricultural machinery and equipment is a high-tech sector. Servicing, if necessary repairing and keeping the complex and demanding agricultural machinery fit and operable for heavy duty field work is the task of agricultural machinery and construction plant mechanics. These experts are in demand and their career prospects are good. At Agritechnica 2009 this very varied training occupation will be presented to the broad public by the DLG in cooperation with H.A.G (Association of German Agricultural Machinery Dealers and Mechanics). in a specially designed workshop in Hall 7. Accompanied by the image campaign "Strong Guys", trainees, apprentices, journeymen, service technicians and master craftsmen will be demonstrating their skill on days of the exhibition on a combine harvester, a tractor, a square baler, and a power saw by carrying out typical maintenance and service operations. Experts from H.A.G. and master craftsmen academies present will also provide answers to questions concerning all aspects of training.

Focus is still on energy plant production – Forestry machinery and equipment for woodland farmers

Cultivating biomass for energy production is still a top theme for agriculture. Farmers will be concentrating on many questions concerning this topic, for example profitability, crops, varieties, cultivation strategies and suitable process technologies. At Agritechnica interested visitors will have the opportunity to gather information about all current issues concerning "energy plant production". A large number of exhibitors will be presenting a comprehensive programme of new varieties with information about energy potentials and biomass production, conditioning, plant technology, labour management and cost effectiveness, chiefly in Halls 26 and 17 at the Exhibition Grounds. In addition a fair number of exhibitors will be presenting classic forestry machinery and equipment for wood farming and many products for energy-specific use of wood. There will be comprehensive advisory services in addition to the machinery and equipment displays provided by exhibitors.

Meeting place for young farmers from all over Europe

Young entrepreneurs and students from many European countries will leave their mark on Agritechnica. Young DLG together with the youth organisation Bund der Deutschen Landjugend (BDL) and the European Association of Young Farmers (CEJA) will be holding a European Young Farmers and Agricultural Students Day this year too. It will start at
13.00 h on Thursday, 12 November, with a meeting of European students. The highlight will then be a panel discussion with young farmers from many countries on the subject "My farm. My ideas. My future. – Farm management by young farmers worldwide" starting at 18.00 h. There will be simultaneous interpreting in German, English and French. The panel discussion will be followed by the now traditional "Young Farmers Party", this year in the German pavilion in the Exhibition Grounds. In addition, on Friday 13 November there will be job forums for young recruits to management and for junior engineers.
