Jyden Bur A/SWith focus on different housing solutions for the gestation unit, Jyden Bur has dedicated manpower to development – not only to meet the 2013 EU-requirements, but also to establish and ensure a cost-effective solution for the farmer.

“We operate with the principle that quality is of outmost importance – and we do not compromise.
This might sound like an expensive solution but it is important for us to highlight the significant savings that the farmer will experience with our solutions”, says export manager John Kongsgaard, Jyden Bur.

The considerations are often based on the idea of new buildings or alternatively renovations of the existing housing system. It is a decision which will influence on several parameters such as strategy, finance and design.

The common denominator for Jyden animal housing systems is the durable fiber material which is very popular - primarily due to its high resistance of daily use and its less volume (only 10 mm thick) compared with similar materials.

“We are currently working on a project which was planned with 10 cm concrete walls as partition in the gestation pen. By changing this to our fiber solutions, it would result in a saving of 103 m2 out of a total of 3.482 m2”, says John Kongsgaard.

New unit with a user-friendly solution

By establishment of a new gestation unit, Jyden Bur offers a customized solution with the gestation crate, JB6000. The gestation crate is designed with a strong and solid locking system Twin-Lock – which is absolutely essential for the functional features of the crate.

When the sow enters the crate, she activates the rear gate which automatically closes behind her. Due to the Twin-Lock system, it prevents other sows to enter an occupied crate.

Jyden Bur has used the Twin-Lock system for the past 10 years – and with great success as the JB6000 provides flexibility as well as more time for the farmer to plan his daily routines. Furthermore the system protects the sow and offers her the opportunities for more exercise and social contact.

Re-building the existing housing system

There are some challenges when re-building older gestation units. Jyden Bur has developed a new rear gate (JB2013) which will be mounted on stanchions behind the existing crates (regardless of width, length and design). This solution will give opportunity to meet upcoming EU-requirements of 2013 and still keeping the cost of investment at a minimum.

"With one hand you can easily release the locking device – which will allow an easier access for inspection of the sow. You can either choose to lock a single crate or a whole section of the crates at a time", says John Kongsgaard.
