Nowadays crops are not only the basis for feed and food production, they are also used for a rising number of other applications. Due to the rapidly expanding global population, increasing wealth and production, raw materials in general are scarce and the demand is booming. Particularly for crops. These developments need to be matched by higher productivity in agriculture and a far more efficient and diversified use of the crop itself. For this reason the first Bioenergy Asia Conference is being organised. This top-notch event dedicated to the latest developments and perspectives in Asia regarding bioenergy in the palm oil, rice, sugar cane, tapioca, ethanol, animal protein and other agricultural sectors will be held on March 9 in Bangkok. The Bioenergy Asia Conference is a new special theme at the VIV Asia 2011 exhibition, taking place at BITEC, Bangkok from March 9 to March 11. The organisers are N.C.C. Exhibition Organizer (NEO), Thailand, and VNU Exhibitions Europe, the Netherlands.

Pavilion
VIV Asia is the international platform for animal production and meat processing, showcasing the industry's developments through the Feed to Meat concept. The Bioenergy Asia Conference is an integral part of the Feedtech-Croptech Asia Pavilion at VIV Asia and focuses on the primary processing phases of crops. The exhibitors at the Pavilion are specialists in milling, processing, storage and handling of raw materials for the feed, food and fuel sectors. Bioenergy is inextricably linked to VIV Asia and other VIV exhibitions staged on four continents. VIV divides the application of crops into five main areas: feed, food (ingredients), fuel (biofuels), fertilizer and further applications. Feedtech-Croptech Asia and the Bioenergy Asia Conference address the technology and trends in these specialist fields.

Significant investments

‘’The rapidly growing population, rising prosperity and a focus on food safety throughout Asia require significant investments in milling equipment for the feed and food sectors. The modernisation, expansion and new construction of feed mills are increasingly driven by the scarcity of raw materials. In response to future market requirements the focus is on the ever advancing technological developments enabling a flexible form of output. This includes the processing of residual products into useful raw materials such as biofuel’’, explains Mr. Niek Reichgelt, Manager Research & Development of VNU Exhibitions Europe.

Structural change

‘’Bioenergy is not a hype or a trend. It is no less than a structural change in our thinking on sustainable energy production, sustainable agriculture and last but not least sustainable animal farming. Bioenergy can be produced from crops, crop waste, other waste, manure, wind, sun, water and other biosources. The Bioenergy Asia Conference is all about the latest trends in the field of biofuel production and other renewable energy production related to the agricultural, animal farming and processing sectors’’.

No more waste

‘’Scarcity implies that every part of the crop must be used in the future. New technologies are needed to process the crop at the lowest cost for the widest range of applications. No part of this raw material can be considered as waste anymore. In this global setting, crops used for feed production, which is the basis of animal protein production and therefore the basis of our VIV Asia, not only compete with other applications of crops but also create synergies with other crop applications’’. These trends are also noted by the major technology suppliers, implying that they extend their range of products to more and different processes for more and different crop applications’’.

Manure

‘’However, bioenergy is more than the production of biofuel from crops alone. It also focuses on biofuel production from animal waste, manure. So biogas can be produced from crops, crop waste and manure. The technology and processes can be similar. Therefore, suppliers can focus simultaneously on both target groups. Bioenergy production from wind, solar and hydropower, for instance, are also included in the concept in as far as they are related to agriculture and rural areas’’, Mr. Reichgelt concludes.

Latest developments

The Bioenergy Asia Conference 2011 will give details of the current status of developments, policies and opportunities in the bioenergy market in Asia. The FAO will give an outline of policies and developments in Asia and will elaborate on ‘Preparing Agriculture for Climate Change’. New processing technologies are discussed by the Nanyang Technology University, Singapore.

Companies such as Alltech, USA and the Asia Biogas Company, Thailand will give suppliers the latest information on future commercial opportunities and how bioenergy can be implemented in rural society. This will also be discussed and demonstrated by the Katsetsart University, Bangkok.

The small scale trends on bioenergy production are highly important for the widespread rural communities who need additional added value to increase their income in a sustainable way. The Katsetsart University will chair the high level Bioenergy Asia Conference.
