Cargill UK now offers its welfare-enhancing feed product BehavePro® in both liquid and in powder form, extending its application to all pig production systems, and at all life stages. It is a combination of active botanical ingredients and can help to reduce stress and anxiety in pigs and improve performance.

In its liquid form, BehavePro® can be added quickly and easily to clean drinking water lines. Alternatively, the powder can be included into the feed. It can be used in all diets, for sows, piglets and grower finishers at the recommended rates. The results are equally successful where either form is used.

“BehavePro has gained a great deal of traction with producers and vets in 2022,” says Cargill pig specialist Jason Evans. Once added to the diet, response is fast – pigs are generally calmer within 48 hours, and production improvements are seen where either the liquid or powder form is used.

“Producers are consistently reporting improvements in fertility and farrowing rates in sows, reduced mortality in piglets, and less aggression-related issues, such as tail-biting, in growing and finisher pigs.”

Trial results from a 600-sow indoor unit has shown that sow mortality was reduced by 50%, farrowing rate improved by 1.5%, and pre-weaning piglet mortality fell by 5% when BehavePro® was included in the diet at the recommended dosage.

“Reducing behavioural issues using nutritional technology is a win-win right through the production chain,” adds Mr Evans. “It also creates a happier environment for staff and for livestock, and supports welfare along with improved, cost-effective and sustained productivity.”
