As a global leader in food ingredients, enzymes and bio-based solutions, Danisco A/S has released its 9th annual sustainability report. It is the beginning of a significant transformation of our sustainability strategy setting ambitious strategies for the future.

The report entitled Ingredients for Sustainability describes our commitments to enabling solutions addressing the global sustainability challenges we face. It has achieved an A+ Global Reporting Initiative application level and has been independently verified by Deloitte.

Danisco will continue its focus on how global sustainability challenges can be transformed into viable business opportunities. By collaboratively applying our knowledge, innovation capabilities and core technologies to devise the best solutions, Danisco adds value for our stakeholders, customers and consumers.

The report also details performance against Danisco’s 2007 targets, summarising global initiatives in the people, planet and profit dimensions of our entire sphere of influence. New strategies have been developed to drive performance in sustainable sourcing, operational efficiency, social responsibility and sustainable innovation and product offerings. Achievements in 2009 include:
  • Reduction in energy consumption by 21% from 2007
  • Reduction in water consumption by 30% from 2007
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions by 15% from 2007
  • Increase in employee engagement to 4.29 with an external benchmark of 3.94
  • Decrease in lost time injury frequency by 28%
  • Development of a Life Cycle Assessment competency and focus including ambitious targets
  • Development of 2020 targets for energy, water, CO2 and renewable energy
  • Commitments to the furthering of sustainable palm and soya sourcing
In response to stakeholder feedback, Danisco has also addressed the pressing issues around how we will align our priorities to meet the challenges of a carbon-restrained world and continue to manage supply-chain risks.

“Our journey towards sustainability has demonstrated significant business value,” says Jeffrey Hogue, VP Corporate Sustainability. “The launch of our new strategies will allow us to further embed sustainability in everything we do.”
