Using data collected by the eAML2 system that tracks pigs being sent for slaughter, the report, Distribution of clean pig production in England – 2016, ranks production from 72 different postcode areas, and for 2016 this includes a total of 8.44 million clean pigs.
The data shows that just 25 postcode areas supply 89% of English clean pig production, and the report includes graphs for each of these, showing the week-by-week production profiles for 2014, 2015 and 2016.
The report also includes tables for all three years that show annual and average weekly clean pig production for each postcode, as well average batch sizes, the average number of units supplying pigs each week and the peak number of units for the area supplying pigs in any one week.
It will come as no surprise to anyone that the majority of England’s pig production is located in the East of the country. Finishers in Yorkshire and Humber region, for example, sent more than a third of the pigs processed in 2016 for slaughter. Add in the East of England as well, and these two regions are the source of more than 60% of the country’s finishers.
At the other end of our industry, the figures identify the postcode areas where smallholders are active, with the South-east proving a particularly strong area for small-scale production.
The report will be of interest to anyone in the UK pig sector supply trade; it not only highlights the absolute numbers of pigs coming out of each postcode area in the past three years, revealing trends in production, but the graphs covering nearly 90% of the country’s clean pigs also show trends in weekly production.
