Paploski was appointed as an assistant professor in January 2025. He brings a strong research background in epidemiology and investigative medicine to the group, which is part of the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

We are delighted that Dr. Paploski joined the VPM department,” says Dr. Montserrat Torremorell, VPM department chair and professor. “His determination, fresh way of approaching complex questions and his strong academic training will be a real asset to advance the scientific knowledge to control and prevent diseases.

A member of the department since 2018, Paploski first joined as a postdoctoral associate and more recently worked as a researcher with the VanderWaal Lab. His research interests are in the epidemiology of infectious diseases affecting animal or human populations. Since joining Minnesota, he has focused on understanding the transmission and evolution of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) affecting swine herds in the U.S.

Paploski plans to continue his efforts on improving the epidemiological understanding of diseases of swine and strengthening lines of investigation associated with dead animal biosecurity and on wean-to-finish disease surveillance.

The swine industry faces many health challenges that inspire me to seek industry-relevant solutions,” he says. “A prime example is PRRSv, which the industry has struggled to control for the past 30 years. I am eager to continue contributing to the industry by strengthening our preventive and containment efforts and by approaching problems from new angles.

Paploski completed his PhD in epidemiology and public health in 2017 at the Institute of Collective Health at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. He earned his master’s degree in epidemiology and investigative medicine in 2013 at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil. and his DVM in 2010 at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil.
