Jeremy S. Pittman, DVM, has been named the recipient of the 2015 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award. The award was presented by Zoetis at the 2015 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, hosted by the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota. The award is given annually to a veterinarian who is dedicated to research and applies scientific knowledge to help improve the pork industry.
Currently a staff veterinarian at Smithfield, Dr. Pittman helps manage the health and wellness of 103,000 sows farrow-to-finish in North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Dr. Pittman also is involved in research and development efforts using a science-based approach to improve production, health and business performance throughout Smithfield’s operations worldwide.
Additionally, he is involved in several task forces at Smithfield, which work diligently to address the health challenges pigs face during disease outbreaks. Dr. Pittman also is passionate about helping educate producers on the responsible use of antibiotics and proper pig handling.
“Thank you to the University of Minnesota and Zoetis for honoring me with this award,” Dr. Pittman said. “It is extremely humbling to have been chosen from a large group of my peers, for whom I have great respect. As a veterinarian, it’s rewarding to know that I’m not only making a difference in the pork industry but also having an impact on the people who make a living caring for pigs.”
Dr. Pittman graduated from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2000 where he received bachelor’s degrees in zoology and animal science. He continued his education at NCSU where he received his DVM in 2004. He also received a master’s degree from Iowa State University in 2014. With a commitment to education and continued learning, he serves as an adjunct faculty member at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and is enrolled in the Executive Veterinary Program at the University of Illinois. Dr. Pittman also is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners certified in Swine Health Management.
“Through his dedication to improve swine health and production along with his commitment to research, we’re pleased to honor Dr. Pittman with this award,” said Mike Kuhn, DVM, MBA, director, U.S. Pork Technical Services, Zoetis. “Dr. Pittman will continue to influence the pork industry with his innovative thinking and passion.”
The Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award is named after the former University of Minnesota veterinarian who dedicated his career to improving the pork industry and the education of practicing veterinarians. After his death in 1992, the annual conference that he co-founded was named in his honor.
Over the past 20 years, this award has been given to some of the most accomplished veterinary leaders in the swine industry.
