The 9th European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM) was held in the City of Prague, Czech Republic from May 3rd to May 5th, 2017. In total 1562 delegates, partners and sponsoring company staff members from in total 49 countries participated in this event. Just before the opening, the participants were confronted with the terrible news of a very tragic car accident involving 3 American couples of their way to the Symposium. On different moments during the Symposium respect was paid and condolences were offered to the victims, their families and relatives. The ESPHM is an annual Symposium jointly organized by the ECPHM (European College of Porcine Health Management), the EAPHM (European Association of Porcine Health Management) and a Local Organizing Committee, which was this time the Czech Pig Veterinary Society. Starting from Wednesday afternoon 8 keynote lectures opened 4 different session that were followed by 4 X 2 parallel sessions of in total 50 oral presentations.345 Posters were presented. The last session ends on Friday morning. Friday at noon time the Symposium closes and the next year’s venue is introduced. In 2018 the 10th ESPHM will be held in Barcelona, Spain from May 9-11th, 2018. The ESPHM LOC in Barcelona is chaired by Dr. Quim Segales (visit: www.ESPHM2018.org)

In 2019 it is time for the Netherlands to host the ESPHM. The ESPHM has become the place in Europe for European swine veterinarians to meet and interact. The College takes care of the scientific content. The Association is making great efforts to assure the interest of swine veterinarians in Europe. Not only at the ESPHM but also in EU representative bodies. The bi-monthly newsletter informing their members on swine diseases related matters is a sign of these increased activities.
