Manitoba Pork applauds the recent announcement of a $10 million federal investment to upgrade HyLife Foods’ pork processing plant in Neepawa. It is an economic boost to Manitoba pork producers and the provincial economy at the right time.
Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette, announced the contribution under the federal government’s Slaughter Improvement Program on behalf of federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz June 13.
“Manitoba Pork congratulates HyLife for all of its accomplishments and contributions to the Manitoba economy, and we appreciate this assistance from the federal government,” says Karl Kynoch, Chairman of Manitoba Pork. “Manitoba’s pork producers have faced a number of challenges over the last few years, but Minister Ritz and his government have not waivered in their support. Likewise, HyLife has continued to demonstrate its commitment to Neepawa and to building the best plant it can for the long term.”
HyLife Foods LP, based in La Broquerie, MB, is both a major pork processor and the largest producer of pigs in Canada. Plant upgrades will allow HyLife to process 1.4 million pigs annually, and provide another 250 jobs. HyLife is a member of the Manitoba Pork board of directors.
In his remarks, HyLife Foods President Don Janzen thanked the provincial producer association, giving special recognition to Kynoch, General Manager Andrew Dickson and Manager of Sustainable Development Programs Mike Teillet for “their tireless efforts in helping us in our success in this matter.”
Manitoba Pork Council represents the province’s 500 pork producers.
