Farmex LtdDon’t be frightened of ICT (Information Communication Technology) on the pig farm — come and see how it’s done. That’s the challenge being thrown to pig producers by Farmex at the British Pig and Poultry Fair.

Farmex personnel will be on hand — on Stand No 67 Hall 2 — to explain, in simple language, how their “smart pig farming” projects will give projected improvements in productivity of up to 30 per cent. These will enable producers to analyse and predict performance in a way that has not previously been possible.

Following considerable investment in research, Farmex has developed a wireless monitoring system which gathers large quantities of information and transmits this to the farm computer. Recognising that interpreting such data is daunting and that the average farmer lacks the time and skills to do this, Farmex has developed a support system to analyse it so that producers can adopt and exploit the technology with relative ease.

Benefits of real-time monitoring include reduction of wasted energy, early prediction of clinical disease, improved use of feed and water and improved management through greater understanding of what is actually happening in the piggery.

In recognition of the value of this technology, the company recently lifted the prestigious Award for Innovation presented by Pig and Poultry Marketing magazine at a London ceremony, attended by The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food, James Paice,

To encourage early birds to take up this challenge, Farmex is appealing to producers’ basic instincts and is offering British bacon butties (what else?) to early-bird visitors.

“We hope this will encourage producers to think about adopting new technologies and marketing to make their businesses more efficient and profitable,” commented Hugh Crabtree, Farmex’s managing director, who collected the award on behalf of the company.

New communication technologies can make pig farming more profitable, says Hugh Crabtree of Farmex.
