Last Monday, July the 17th 2017, the annual IRTA-CReSA results presentation day was held in Josep Tarragó Conference room in Torre Marimón, IRTA headquarters. Since the integration of CReSA to IRTA in 2015, it is a tradition that this event takes place in this historic building.
The general director of IRTA, Josep Maria Monfort, accompanied by Armand Sanchez, UAB’s Vice President for Research, inaugurated the event announcing that Joaquim Segalés will cease his responsibilities as head of the Animal Health Program CReSA on August 31. He also informed that the person who will replace him, as of September 1st, 2017, will be Dr. Fernando Rodríguez.
Next, the outgoing director took stock of the year 2016, describing it as the year of the consolidation of the CReSA within the structure of the IRTA. He also announced new changes in the structure of IRTA-CReSA, including the departure of IRTA-CReSA’s head of services David Solanes, who will now coordinate the platform for animal infrastructures of IRTA, and the announcement of a center manager position opening for IRTA-CReSA, which will support the new head of the program in management duties. Anna Palli, Director of Organization and Corporate Development at IRTA, reviewed the new organizational model of IRTA, which groups the programs in large areas.
The event was attended by Beatriz Muñoz, Assistant Director General of Health and Animal Hygiene and Traceability of the MAPAMA, who, together with Dr. Segalés and Dr. Llilianne Ganges presented the IRTA-CReSA nomination as an OIE Collaborating Center in emerging and re-emerging diseases of pigs and as a Reference Center for Classical Swine Fever, respectively.
Next, it was time to present the results of the tasks performed at IRTA-CReSA during 2016 for administration related to the control of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, tuberculosis, slaughterhouse pathology and monitoring of zoonotic viruses and viruses of importance in animal health Such as West Nile Fever virus, Avian influenza, Blue Tongue, African and Classical swine fever, Porcine vesicular disease, Aujesky's disease, etc. The event was attended by personnel from the Department of Health, such as Mrs. Imma Cervós, Deputy Director General of Food Safety and Health Protection and Ms. Carme Chacón, Assistant Director of the ACSA, as well as staff of the Department of Agriculture Livestock, Fisheries and Food: Mr. Joaquim Xifra, Deputy General Director of Livestock, and Ms. Cristina Massot, head of the Animal Health Prevention Service.
The morning sessions were closed by Sergio López and Xavier Abad, reviewing the activities of the Field Studies team and the Bio-Safety Level 3 Unit, respectively.
The afternoon sessions focused on discussing a selection of hot topics in which IRTA-CReSA is involved:
- Virus del Zika (Dr. Núria Busquets)
- MERS-CoV (Dr. Júlia Vergara)
- Resistance to antimicrobials (Dr. Lourdes Migura)
- Microbiota (Dr. Flor Correa and Dr. Ignacio Badiola)
