Manipulation of the microbiome in livestock and companion animals in the global context of antimicrobial reduction was at the center of discussions among key scientists, veterinaians and industry experts gathered in London end of October for the Animal Mircobiome Congress. Lallemand Animal Nutrition was proud to support this scientific event as sponsor and speaker.
Dr Mathieu Castex, company’s R&D Director, was Chairman of a session and took part in a panel discussion with other industrial players dedicated to the contribution of microbiome data to the development of solutions targeting a prudent use of antimicrobial in animal production, in the context of the “One Health” strategy: “Translating Available Microbiome Technology into Practice”. “The amount of data generated by microbiota research is tremendous, thanks to advances in sequencing technologies. Today, the limit is not in the production of these data but in their analysis and the functional interpretation that can be drawn,” said Castex. Lallemand highlighted that using case studies addressing practical applications is likely to prove what these new tools can bring to livestock productions.
“Legislation against the use of antibiotics in livestock feed is now active in many countries across Europe and the USA, and subsequently finding novel and effective strategies to manipulate the animal microbiome has become a critical priority. Manipulation of the microbiome has been suggested to have beneficial effects in performance and productivity, mitigation of methane emission, immunomodulatory properties, countering infectious pathogens, protecting health and improving welfare in a wide array of livestock and companion animal species,” comments Guy Clayton, Animal Microbiome Congress.
The Animal Microbiome Congress brought together researchers, producers, feed manufacturers, pharma and nutrition companies to discuss ideas, form collaborations and identify strategies for development. It offered two days of intense networking, unpublished research and translational case studies.
This event was a very good opportunity to interact with a diverse panel of key scientists, start-ups and industry leaders all strongly involved in understanding the key role of Animal Microbiome. The format definitly favored interaction between all participants.
