Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is seeking to appoint three independent Directors to the Board at this year’s Annual General Meeting, with applications now being accepted.

MLA Chairman Don Heatley said MLA’s skills-based board is seeking nominees from a range of areas of expertise, who will then be subject to a thorough selection process.

“The MLA Board is skills-based, with experience and industry knowledge in on and off-farm production, research and development and marketing.

“To maintain the balance of expertise on the Board, this year we are looking for candidates with skills and experience in one or more of the areas of southern beef, south-eastern lamb, northern beef production systems, livestock exports and finance,” said Mr Heatley.

The Selection Committee comprises three members directly elected by producer members of MLA, three members appointed by the producer peak councils and three existing MLA Directors who are not standing for election this year. The Committee, assisted by an external Board recruitment consultant, considers prospective directors based on skills, experience and industry knowledge, conducts interviews and then endorses candidates for election to the MLA Board of Directors. They are then presented to the AGM for election by MLA members.

The primary role of the MLA Board is to provide direction to the management of the company, ensuring that appropriate performance goals are set and achieved, risk is properly managed, and the interests of industry participants and other stakeholders are taken into account. This includes strategy development and review of governance and financial performance.

MLA has over 47,000 livestock producer members. It is a producer-owned company, providing services and solutions to the $16 billion red meat industry including livestock producers, processors, exporters, foodservice operators and retailers.

MLA’s core activities are growing demand for Australian red meat, improving market access for products, increasing productivity across the supply chain, promoting industry integrity and sustainability, and increasing industry and people capability.

MLA has offices throughout Australia and in key red meat markets in Japan, USA, Korea, Europe, South East Asia, and the Middle East.

The closing date for applications is 21 May 2010.
