Since its foundation in 1995 by Hervé Balusson, Olmix has grown from the producer of the well known sanitizer Mistral and trace elements into a group with 200 employees and 7 plants in Europe. Olmix celebrated its 15th anniversary on September 12th - 13th in Brittany France.

On September 13th a seminar on the topic “The New Technologies to feed 9 billion Humans in 2050” was held at Zoopole of Ploufagran, a Research Center located in Brittany. It attracted more than 200 attendees from 4 continents. Several speakers gave their views and opinions on the challenge of feeding the Planet in 2050.Speakers included Herve Balusson, Olmix Chairman, Mr Alain Glon, President of Glon Group, Dr Francois Madec, National Agency of Sanitary Security, Prof Laval, Veterinary School of Nantes, Marc Le Fur, Vice President of the France National Assembly and other internationally based contributors.

Here are few ideas that emerged from the seminar:
1. We should optimize our world in order to get more profit: “more wheat for more people”
2. We should assess consumption, to reduce the world’s carbon footprint, by means of “improvement in telecommunications, less transport, less pollution, etc.

Another interesting idea concerns aquacultural production:

How are we going to produce 100 millions tons of aquaculture products to feed the new population of the world? Should this be based on the same principles as intensive farming?

What could be the role of carbohydrates and polysaccharides? Asia is rich in these, but lacks proteins!

Plants have enormous potential as sources of protein : for example Spirulina, cassava leaves, seaweed…

Should we come back to look again at the basics of the ecosystems regarding the intensive race for proteins/energy? Should we explore new alternatives offered by the association of carbohydrates/enzymes? The Ulva lactuca and other seaweeds could offer new food potential.. It is interesting to see the work being carried out by the different research institutes such as National Research Institute, the Seaweed Centre etc and also from private initiatives such as those being carried out by private companies , such as Olmix.. Such initiatives are to be applauded and need supporting !

In addition to the seminar, Olmix had also arranged for the international visitors (feed millers, farmers , Olmix agents ) whilst in Brittany to visit pig , poultry and dairy farms plus the Olmix feedmill/processing plant and universities .In addition the international group visited the famous agricultural fair: SPACE, in Rennes.

The 45 strong Asian delegation included attendees from Japan, China, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand , Indonesia and Vietnam. Other Eastern delegates came from India and Pakistan .
