While many producers at least have some form of recording system for their breeding herds, many still do not record the performance of their feeding enterprises. Yet it is here that small differences in feed conversion rate and daily liveweight gain can make large differences to the profitability of the enterprise, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company ACMC Ltd.

With higher finished pig prices, he suggests now is a good time to ensure that an efficient recording system is put in place for when margins become tighter.
