Our new range of Freedom Food endorsed pork gives you an even bigger choice of affordable meat from pigs raised in better conditions, to welfare standards approved by the RSPCA.

There’s no doubt that a growing number of you are concerned about the welfare of pigs. You want to know where your pork has come from and how the animals have been reared. And, of course, you want value for money. This is why we’ve more than doubled our range of higher-welfare pork, and have also launched a new, more affordable range called Freedom Food endorsed pork.

Our new range of Freedom Food endorsed pork

Our new range of Freedom Food endorsed pork is a more affordable way for you to enjoy higher-welfare pork. The sows spend their entire lives outdoors and give birth in their own shelters, where they can build nests to ensure comfort for themselves and their piglets. The piglets remain outdoors with the sow until they have finished weaning, and then they are moved indoors in groups to comfy, straw-bedded barns where they have room to run around and interact with other pigs, expressing their natural foraging and rooting behaviours. The range includes chops, steaks and joints – look out for the Freedom Food logo on packs instore.

Taste the difference Freedom Food pork

Our Taste the difference Freedom Food endorsed pork comes from our special Hampshire cross-breed pigs, bred and reared outdoors exclusively for Sainsbury’s. The sows spend their entire lives outdoors, where they can forage for food, which is supplemented by a natural cereal diet. The piglets live outdoors for at least half their lives before being moved indoors in groups to straw-bedded farms. We selected the Hampshire cross-breed because it produces pork with more marbling fat, giving a distinctive flavour and texture. The combination of the breed, diet and maturation process produces meat with a fantastic flavour and succulence.

These standards cover each stage of an animal’s life, including handling, journey times and travel conditions,to ensure their welfare at every stage of their lives is improved.
