The poster was titled “Effect of antioxidant supplementation in sows pre-farrow and during lactation on sow and piglet performance”.
Previous studies have shown that the physiological and nutritional demands for a sow during late pregnancy and lactation impose an aggressive metabolic burden that eventually leads to systemic oxidative stress. In a high stress event such as farrowing or weaning, the sow’s total antioxidant capacity declines, resulting in detrimental effects on piglet survivability and sow health. Results of this study suggest that supplementing sows with a vitamin and antioxidant strategy at the time of a health challenge may result in an improvement in piglet performance, more pigs out the door, and the potential to reduce the economic burden of these challenges for the producer.
