Points of Pride Research Day is the annual event that celebrates the College of Veterinary Medicine’s research while honoring faculty, fellows, students, and research partners who contribute to the advancement of biomedical sciences and veterinary medicine.
The Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence recognizes researchers whose
innovative studies have advanced the scientific standing of veterinary medicine. Dr. Maria Pieters accepted the award at this year’s College of Veterinary Medicine Research Day.
Dr. Pieters is an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. She currently leads the Swine Disease Eradication Center (SDEC). Dr. Pieters is an internationally recognized researcher in Swine Mycoplasmas and is passionate about disease elimination. She has become the reference in Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae eradication and increased the industry’s understanding of this economically significant pathogen. She wrote the book on Mycoplasmas in Swine!
The 2022 Mark of Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Noelle Noyes. Dr. Noelle Noyes is
a veterinary epidemiologist in the Veterinary Population Medicine Department at the University of Minnesota. She joined the College of Veterinary Medicine in June 2018 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Dr. Noyes was recently awarded a prestigious McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. Dr. Noyes’ research tackles today’s biggest challenges in agriculture, food security, antimicrobial resistance and sustainability. Her work integrates observations at the level of microbial and host populations, and the environmental systems in which they interact. A principal investigator on multiple USDA NIFA grants, she has received NSF and NIH funding in addition to funding from the National Pork Board, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Minnesota Beef Council and other research foundations.
