VIV chooses clear role in rapid intensification of Russian livestock farming

VIV is strengthening its intermediary role to help bring about the desired strong growth in Russian livestock farming.

VIVVIV is strengthening its intermediary role to help bring about the desired strong growth in Russian livestock farming. For this purpose, the organisation has presented an implementation plan in which international companies in the livestock farming supply chain, governments, scientists and financiers will work together to provide Russian producers with knowledge and technology. This need for knowledge is being met with three themes: MeatMeetings, CropTech-FeedTech and Animal Health. All activities will take place during or around VIV Russia, which is being held from 21 to 23 May at the Crocus Exhibition Centre, Moscow.

Project Manager Guus van Ham of VIV wants to provide Russian companies with a platform, offering everything that is needed to build efficient supply chains for the intensive production of poultry meat, eggs and pork. Animal feed and animal health – at the beginning of the supply chain – and product processing – at the end of the chain – will play a very important role in this. “We want to share our knowledge with the Russians in these areas in particular. We will also be presenting solutions for the effects of antibiotics use during a series of congresses and seminars. These congresses will be high-level, objective and non-commercial,” says Guus van Ham.

Economic sessions


This year’s VIV Russia is the seventh edition. Historically the trade show has been strongly oriented towards poultry production. Consequently it was a logical step to link the congress of the World’s Poultry Science Organisation (WPSA) to VIV Russia. Dutch Poultry Centre member companies will also be offering their services collectively at VIV Russia and will present their successful ‘Dutch Approach’.

“But given the demand in this country, we are also aiming to help boost the pork supply chain. The National Union of Pig Breeders will be holding its annual meeting during VIV, for example. Together with Rabobank we will be presenting the results of the survey of intensive livestock farming in Russia. In a series of economic sessions following directly, we want to help top Russian managers make their organisations more profitable. Another example of events designed to help decision-makers are the MeatMeetings. Meat marketing will play a central role in these sessions. VIV Russia will be providing resources on all levels to help achieve higher quality production and more added value for the consumer. In addition to the sectors mentioned above, VIV Russia will also feature a wide range of turkey meat exhibitors. There are enormous opportunities in Russia for that product as well,” Van Ham says.

Integral approach


According to the VIV project manager, Russia is more receptive to the integral approach than most other countries. “With their history of nationalised industries, the Russians are used to working with an integral supply chain approach. They have strong production umbrella organisations for pig and poultry farming. With the knowledge and technologies that our exhibitors and partners have at their disposal, we can help boost the position of modern intensive livestock farming in Russia even further. Our aim is to offer the elite of the Russian business community everything we have at our disposal to achieve this.”

Innovative partnership


This year, Russia and the Netherlands are celebrating their long history of intensive trade relations. Both countries intend to work at innovative partnerships going forward. With this bilateral year, the Netherlands wants to continue to assist Russian efforts to reform the economy and society and make optimum use of dialogue at a political level. “With this in mind, VIV Russia could not have come at a better time,” says Van Ham, “and we are getting a lot of help from both governments. The climate for collaborating with Russian industry associations is perfect. We are investing a great deal of money in promotion so that we attract the right visitors. We will be staging country submissions and making all kinds of expertise available. This is the time and place for VIV Russia.”
