Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health convenes annually the European PRRS Research Award, to fund research projects that generate new and practical information to better understand the devastating swine disease PRRS control.
Boehringer funds three research projects on swine disease PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome) with €25,000 each one. The award ceremony took place last October 9 in the Boehringer Ingelheim headquarters in Ingelheim, Germany.
Carlos Piñeiro was one of the winners chosen out of more than 20 high quality proposals from all across Europe, because of the PRRSon Project.
These were the other awarded projects:
- Interference of Maternally Derived Antibodies with PRRS Vaccine in Piglets: Impact on Viral Parameters and Transmission (Olivier Bourry and Nicolas Rose, Anses – French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety, France)
- Alternative Sampling Methods in newborn Piglets for PRRS Diagnosis (Gerard E. Martín Valls, IRTA Campus de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain)
PRRSons Project is developed from our own experience of PRRS control on farms.
The industry has different ways to control PRRS (biosecurity, vaccines and animal handling) but ultimately depends on the human factor applying the measures.
PigCHAMP Pro Europe have detected a severe deficiency in knowledge and understanding of the disease and its forms of control by farmers. They are unaware of the important role on this issue. Experience has shown us that in many cases, especially the most complicated, training, awareness and involvement of operators of farms in the control program, become the key tool that gives us ultimate control of the illness in the long term.
The objective of this project is to measure objectively the impact of training on PRRS control and set the steps for it to become an available tool to veterinarians.
