Do you know why rodenticides don't work?
Indirect causes:
Rodents do not get access to the product, usually due to poor placement of the bait points if they have been put in places that are not very accessible or not convenient for rodent activity.
Direct causes:
- Resistance: occurs when rodents do not die after ingestion. This is the most serious reason since nothing can be done to prevent it. It is worth mentioning that rodents show resistance to most anticoagulant rodenticides.
- Aversion: Sometimes they do not like the product, it causes them to reject it and it is usually due to its formulation rather than its active ingredient.
- Neophobia: simply after placing it in the bait points, as it is something new, it provokes a reaction of distrust or fear, which makes them not even come close to try it. This is a natural behavior in rodents, mainly in rats. So, in the case of neophobia, no matter what product is used, what we have to try to change is the rodents' behavior. This could be solved with a good intervention protocol/practice.
To minimize these direct and indirect causes, having a solid knowledge of rodent behavior is essential. Use an appropriate product and have a good integrated management system. In addition, this control should include continuous monitoring of activity, sufficient bait points, and good bait placement.
Programs can be planned to keep rat and mouse infestations under control throughout the year with minimal expense and difficulty.
