Last February 24th, the new European project in which Produmix is involved was presented at a press conference. It aims to test the technical and economic feasibility of algae used for the treatment of saline wastewater from the food industry. The project, with a total budget of 9.3 million Euros and 19 partners from 9 countries, is part of the Horizon 2020 program: Social Challenge of Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw Materials.

The European Commission launched this call given the need to take measures to accelerate the commercialization of eco-solutions, in order to safeguard our ecosystem and stimulate a sustainable economic growth.

One of the main research lines of Produmix in this project is focused on the evaluation of new raw materials or by-products that may be used in the animal feed industry, thus providing greater nutritional efficiency.

The ambitious commitment of Produmix will let to define alternative sources of protein which, besides being a free source of genetic modifications and / or transgenic, allows with little dependence on treatments with herbicides and other pollutants (common practice in traditional sources protein), not only provide an effective and environmentally friendly solution for wastewater treatment, but also represent an innovative way to produce algae biomass, which will subsequently be used as raw material as a new source of protein, thus reducing the economic and environmental impact of the ecosystem.
