From the beginning of 2023 until now, the country has had 576 outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in 530 communes of 44 provinces and cities; The number of sick, dead, and destroyed pigs is 24,218, down 63% compared to the same period in 2022. Currently, ASF is present in 28 provinces and cities. The epidemic is most severe in the provinces of Lang Son (especially in Loc Binh district), Cao Bang (Thong Khanh), Dak Lak, Quang Binh, Son La, and Binh Phuoc.

According to the Department of Animal Health, recent outbreaks mainly occurred in small livestock farming households that buy breeds of unknown origin and have poor barn hygiene. There are hidden epidemics, slow reporting of epidemics, overselling, slaughtering of sick pigs suspected of being infected with the disease, and throwing away dead pig carcasses. In many localities, farmers are not interested in using the ASF vaccine for their pigs. The reasons are that it has only been allowed to be widely used since July 2023, localities have not had a plan, the ASF vaccine is not on the list of mandatory vaccinations, and the price of the vaccine is still relatively high.
