Alabama bans food products produced from cultured animal cells

The Alabama Senate unanimously approved legislation that would prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of food products produced from cultured animal cells within Alabama.

Alabama just released a bill that would prohibit the manufacture, sale, or distribution of food products produced from cultured animal cells. The bill would also provide criminal and administrative penalties for violations of this prohibition.

The bill next goes to a House committee for consideration. If signed into law, the legislation would be effective Oct. 1, 2024.

Civil penalties for food service establishments would range from $100 to $10,000, according to the bill’s fiscal note.
