Last Wednesday, October 5, all measures applied after the detection of African swine fever (ASF) three months ago on a pig farm in the municipality of Emsbüren, district of Emsland (Lower Saxony) were lifted.
On July 4, the first case of ASF was confirmed in Lower Saxony, Germany's leading pig-producing state. The disease was detected on a farm with 280 sows and about 1,500 piglets, about 20 km from the Dutch border. As a consequence, a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers and a surveillance zone with a radius of ten kilometers were established around the outbreak in the municipality of Emsbüren. Since then, no further cases of ASF have been detected on other pig farms or in the wild boar population, therefore after 90 days, all restrictive measures can now be lifted.
The route of entry of the virus into the farm could not be determined.
