This year's corn season is far from the growth it experienced last year when nearly 2 million hectares were planted. This time last year, climatic difficulties also hindered planting, and while only 870,000 hectares had been sown there was still the possibility of late planting. No one anticipated the leafhopper plague that ended up affecting those late plantings.
This year, the situation is different. There are very few producers who, faced with the need, are considering planting late corn. As a result, the 2024/25 season is expected to close with only 930,000 hectares of early-planted corn. The optimal planting window has closed, and 30% of the intended area has not been planted. Compared to last year, corn production in the core region is expected to fall by 52% if there are no significant late plantings. The 2024/25 corn area will be the third lowest of the last ten seasons.
Soybean planting has begun with a 20% increase in area compared to the previous season. This year, an additional 980,000 hectares are being planted, largely due to areas that were abandoned for corn planting, either because of the fear of the leafhopper plague or the lack of available moisture for sowing. The planting area in the core region is estimated to reach 5.5 million hectares, which is 20% more than the previous season.
