After an increase by more than 20% in the Argentinian pig production, this country almost reached self-sufficiency for this kind of meat.
Las year 4.8 million pigs were slaughtered and 416,000 tonnes of pig meat were produced, with a consumption per capita of some 10.40 kg per year and inhabitant. Ten years before, each Argentinian ate 5-6 kg of pig meat per year, and most of it was processed meat. With respect to year 2012, the growth of the supply reached 21.46%; but the rise was much higher from an historic prospective: a decade before only 158,000 tonnes were produced.
With respect to the pig meat imports, they reached 16,794 tonnes in 2013. In the last two decades Argentina had never bought so little pig meat in the foreign markets. What is usual is that these imports were of 30-50 thousand million tonnes per year, with a peak of 71,900 tonnes in 1998. Most of it comes from Brazil, but also from Chile and even from some European countries.
