At the end of the first quarter of the year, the hog slaughter decreased by 2.43% compared to the same period of the previous year, going from 1,787,512 to 1,744,087 head. Similarly, pork production decreased by 2.64% in the same period, reaching 161,258 tons (t). On the other hand, international trade figures indicate a 51.5% increase in the volume of imports for the period, from 9,386 to 14,219 tons, while exports fell by 81.8%, from 10,669 tons in the first quarter of 2021 to just 1,940 tons in the same period of 2022. Per capita consumption for the month of March reached 17.7 kg/inhabitant.
General live hog prices showed relative stability throughout the quarter, with slight variations that kept the price around ARS$180/kg. The average price for the period stood at ARS$181.1/kg, which represents a 52% increase compared to the same period of 2021 (ARS$119.2/kg).
Annual forecasts
According to the latest estimates report for livestock and poultry published by the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service on April 6, pork production is expected to grow by 0.7% in 2022, reaching 700 thousand tons. Regarding international trade, UDSA projects a 20% increase in the volume of imports, which would reach 60 thousand t (10 thousand t more than in 2021). A 40% drop in total exports is expected, which would be 12 thousand t.
