A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of China visited the facilities of the National Animal Health and Agri-food Quality Service (SENASA) of Argentina, in the framework of cooperation agreements on animal health, signed last year by the leaders of both countries.

As the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of China, Yu Kangzhen, was received by the Argentine Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Casamiquela, part of the delegation visited the headquarters of SENASA and the National Reference Laboratory, located in the Buenos Aires city of Martínez, where they discussed the formation of working groups on animal health and, in particular, FMD.

At both meetings, authorities and professionals from SENASA, accompanied by professionals from INTA and CONICET, explained to the Chinese delegation the scope of the National Programme for Control and Eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease, in force since 2001, vaccination strategies against the disease, laboratory diagnostic techniques, and quality control of the vaccine. They also discussed the creation of an antigen and vaccine bank.

In July 2014 the presidents of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, and China, Ji Xinping, signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between both countries, which included an agreement on animal health, with an annex on FMD.
