According to the newspaper La Voz, the Argentinian government is working together with Brazil towards a regulation regarding the pork trade. The scheme that is being used in the negotiations is the implementation of an importation quota for Brazilian pork. The system would be similar to the current one between both countries for the entrance of Argentinian dairy products in the Brazilian market.
“I have talked with the Brazilian Minister, Mr. Blairo Maggi, and what we will do together with the Ministry of International Markets is to establish pork importation quotas,” said the Minister of Agro-industry, Mr. Ricardo Buryaile, in Rosario, during his participation in the meeting on the Grain Industry Scenarios organised by the Fundación Libertad.
During the first 5 months of 2016, the entrance of pork (especially of Brazilian pork) has grown by more than 50%, because in Brazil the supply and the costs are more competitive.
The situation created by the increase in the imports made the Argentinian Agricultural Federation (Federación Agraria Argentina, FAA) ask for a compensation regarding the price and the closing of the entrance of Brazilian cuts and pork processed products.
