After the discovery, on January 8th, of 2 ASF-positive wild boars in the strengthened surveillance area, between Meix-devant-Virton and Sommethonne, the buffer and surveillance areas perimeters were widened.
Specifically, the buffer area grows towards the west by 3,700 ha, between the Nationale 88 road (Limes-Gérouville) and the Nationale 871 road (Virton-Rouvroy-border with France). The measures regarding this area remain unchanged, but the search for wild boar corpses has been intensified.
The surveillance area reaches 856 ha to the north of the infected area, near Florenvilles, with no impact on the forestry tasks nor the traffic. No positive wild boars were found in this area.
The total depopulation of wild boars has been decided, both in the surveillance and in the strengthened surveillance areas. Also, a mechanism to improve the destruction of wild boars through their capture, and a network of additional fences is being built, whilst the DNF and hunters carry out night patrols.
