After the first case of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar in the district of Märkisch-Oderland was officially confirmed on September 30, the restriction zones in Brandenburg are now being expanded. The European Union has approved Brandenburg's proposal for the expanded ASF zones by an implementing resolution, which was published today in the EU Official Journal. There are now two core areas and one contiguous endangered area. The previous endangered area has been extended north to Märkisch-Oderland and now encloses Frankfurt (Oder).
The districts and district-free city affected by the change of the epidemic area will now adapt their general animal disease directives accordingly. These general decrees will also order the necessary measures to control ASF and to protect the domestic pig population and the wild boar population from the threat.
The first core area around the sites near Sembten in the Spree-Neisse district and near Neuzelle in the Oder-Spree district has an area of around 150 square kilometers. The second core area around the site in Bleyen in the Märkisch-Oderland district has an area of around 45 square kilometers.
