According to an announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture of Hesse, following the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in the state, the disease has been detected in a total of six wild boar carcasses. All infected animals were found in the so-called core zone of 7,300 hectares in the district of Groß-Gerau. The first infected wild boar was discovered there last week south of Rüsselsheim. The other infected animals were found about 500 meters from the first find.
Samples were taken last week from a total of 23 wild boar carcasses. Six of them have tested positive and the results of two samples are still pending.
The new cases are not unexpected, as an intensive search for carcasses has been carried out for days with drones and specially trained dogs.
